Internationally renowned for its high-quality dinnerware, Villeroy & Boch also makes superb glassware for the table. The Maxima collection, as its name suggests, consists of generously-sized wine glasses, all undecorated and clean-lined, which beautifully accessorize any china pattern. Made in Austria, home to some of the world's finest glassmakers, Maxima glassware is dishwasher-safe, although all delicate stemware is best washed carefully by hand. Named for the famous wine region of France, the Maxima Burgundy glass stands nine inches tall in a rounded balloon shape, which provides greater surface area to allow such red wines as Burgundy and Pinot Noir to breathe. The supple curve of the bowl forms an unbroken silhouette with the stem, which narrows as it nears the base, creating artistic tension as the glass appears to balance on a very thin point. Those who prefer the classic tulip shape for a red wine might try the taller Maxima Bordeaux glass.
