5 out of 5 stars What every Japan lover wishes for...   October 13, 2008
Straight from the beautiful mind of James Clavell comes the epic book Shogun. An english pilot on an ill fated boat, a land of strange humans, god seems to be turning away from poor Blackthorne. The story begins in the sea, where we first meet our weathered battered crew. Oringinally sent out on a mission to revage their enemy in the New World, they instead ended up in Japan. It's here where our story really begins. The crew, a bunch of portegues sailors are being led by John Blackthorne, the only englishman with them, and sadly for them, the only pilot. After being attacked by a terrible storm out in sea, the crew wakes to find themselves in a strange land, where the humans seem to be out of this world. Not only do the have differnt features then most of the crew is used to seeing, but these humans also have a completely upside down culture. Bow or be killed, behave or die, and that's simply the tip of the iceburg. Thankfully for this ill fated crew, they have blackthorne to help them. This book was a very exciting read, and I advise this book for any lover of Japan.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Epic of Breathtaking Scope   October 9, 2008

Every two or three years, I have brought out Shogun and reread it which now amounts to about twelve times. Every time, the book takes on new dimensions and tones. The story of John Blackthorne, a Dutch seafarer who makes it across the Pacific to the Japans, is an enthralling and embracing story. One of the most engrossing elements of the story is Blackthorne's struggle with Japan's language and culture. As the embodiment of the stranger in a strange land, we too are taken on this great journey set in Japan's feudal kingdom. The characters are extraordinarily well-drawn. The plotting is intricate. The description of the society is detailed and insightful.

Even if you read it once, you will go on a priceless journey.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read   September 16, 2008
Shogun gives a wonderful picture of 16th century Japan. The character development is excellent and the story is just plain fun to read.

Quite frankly, one of the best books I have ever read, even though the ending disappointed me.

5 out of 5 stars Loosen the Jesses on the Falcon of Your Soul!   July 14, 2008
What a great read--kept thinking about the story while I was off in normal life. It was very interesting to see the main character transform from one culture to another as the storyline progressed. Just one of those books where you're sad that it ended, the magic over, and you're left cleaning up your mind space from such a great literary party.
