5 out of 5 stars Great For Office Negotiations   September 24, 2008
I actually ordered this from [...] since the value pack is cheaper there ($[...], same price as the gun itself).

Pros:
- Sheer number of darts is pretty staggering. Three people on my team have vulcans and when we hit someone's office, it will quite literally carpet the floor in darts
- Accepts any Micro darts. I bought a couple packs of the tagger darts so that as I lose darts, I can keep the belt full.
- Has rails, so if you've got any rail-mounted accessories, they work here (I recommend the red dot light from the Recon if you've got it)

Cons:
- Ammo box gets knocked off easily. Combined with the fact that it jams a lot if you don't have the ammo box on, it means you can end up looking silly (okay, sillier) if you try to bust in to someone's office, knock off the ammo box on the door frame and then jam three rounds later.
- Reloading takes an age. Fortunately, the value pack comes with a second belt, and loading a new belt is pretty quick. I still recommend having something else for reloading.
- You'll probably get one used against you at some point if they get popular in the office. I recommend a meat shield.

Anyway, it's a lot of toy for $[...]. If you're in to Nerf, it's well worth it, just keep something handheld around for quick use.

5 out of 5 stars Vulcan In Australia   September 23, 2008
Bought it for my son who "earnt" a big piece of parental love at a school music recital.

We live in Australia so this unit took some serious effort to get it here.
It was worth the effort he loves it and it is a seriously cool toy, the only downside is the lack of darts available locally. Countdown to 0 darts has begun! (down to 45 left after ~3weeks).

Upside is it will use most other Nerf darts including the "Velcro tagger" darts that would make it a formidable opponent in dart tag matches.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate trump card for the office arms race   September 11, 2008

It was getting to be a pretty nasty furball. Enemy cubicle factions had been gaining ground, and it was becoming steadily more and more difficult to deny them entry into the critical software development lab. Sadly, we were losing ground daily due to the fact that the enemy forces were freshly infused with cheap, easy to maintain, hand-held weapons. In order to combat our well-armed adversaries, something had to be done. The last area-denial system was not effective. The new-fangled USB foam missile launcher system we had previously installed to address the threat simply could not fire accurately enough, and was no match for the sustained fire of the Evil Horde's many N-Strike Mavericks and Longshots.

Enter the Vulcan.

This tripod-mounted terror was just what the doctor ordered. Mounted behind my desk with a clear view of the doorway and connecting hallway, this beast struck terror into the horde even before the first shot. The obvious psy-ops advantage was due to this machine's sheer enormity. This baby is long, tall, heavy, and plain scary-looking. I'd say it catches the eye. This thing is the color of nightmares. The Vulcan's color scheme was obviously decided upon by a escaped mental patient that used to work in a candy corn factory. Its aesthetics leave a bit to be desired. But its performance? Pure dart-slinging glory.

The unboxing and setup of the weapon was a snap. Back at the ranch, and far from the foamy stench of the battlefield, I ran the Vulcan through it's test paces. Initially I was not impressed. Three rounds, then jam. Over and over. Just as I was about to give up, I realized the problem. The darts were brand new, and the rubber tips were incredibly clean, and more than a little tacky. They weren't releasing from the belts properly, thereby jamming the Vulcan. I imagine a few more belts of fire through it would have done the trick, but being impatient, I sprayed the belt down with a touch of Pam cooking spray.

Now, if one of the dreaded Horde so much as stick their nose around the corner they get 3 shots per second of whistling, foamy death. No jams, no worries.

As far as performance, it's got mediocre range and accuracy. However, the sustained rate of fire makes this a non-issue. I can afford to miss with a dart or two, as many, many more are right on its heels.

I am proud to say that this weapon has effectively curtailed the enemy incursions into our exclusion zone, and has allowed our troops to go from area denial to aggressive raiding, thereby pushing the enemy lines back to beyond the conference room. We have regained our pride and our territory. Thanks Vulcan!
