4 out of 5 stars Despite age, "Return of the Phantom" is actually pretty good!   May 14, 2006

Let me start by stating that I simply love Gaston Leroux's novel "The Phantom of the Opera." It is perhaps my favorite piece of classic literature, and it inspired my favorite musical (three times, actually).

This "Phantom of the Opera" computer game is surprusingly...good! Younger players not used to the graphics of the early 1990s might frown at first, but they'll soon get over the face that none of the characters really have faces (or voices if you are playing the 3.5" floppy disk version, as I do).

The game is 99% very simple to play, even in challenging mode. The 1% of the game that will most likely have you wanting to smash the discs is the maze in the catacoombs (I finally just started moving through it randomly until I found the end). The 3 star rating for fun is because while the game really is a fun game to play, the point-and-click movement of Raoul gets a little old after a while (sometimes he just walks so slow!). the end of the game is also a little anticlimactic, as the "fighting" you must do involves clicking what you want to do, and a brief animation of it happening follows. Nothing compared to today's games, involving six buttons to perform the simple task of "shoot gun."

Overall, the game is beautifully done, with images of the Opera House that look pretty darn good considering how old the game is. The Phantom's face will not dissappoint you when it is finally revealed, and fans of both the book and musical will be pleased with the similarities among them (mostly from the musical is the design of the chandelier; the rest is all Leroux or inspired-by). Diehard lovers of the novel, however, will be upset by Christine's brown hair and the part mentioning that Madame Giry wrote the book about all of the events happening because of the "Opera Ghost."

NOTE: If you are planning to use this game on a Windows XP system, you will need the softward DOSbox to play it properly. It will NOT work on a Windows XP (or any other system without DOS) without DOSbox.
