BRAVO, WAYNE NEWTON !!! December 28, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This fine collection of hits by the great Wayne Newton really caters to a more serious fan who wants a lot of Wayne's hits on a single CD. Wayne's voice never sounded better; and these are tracks recorded from his early years at Capitol Records. Awesome!
"Heart (I Hear You Beating)" starts the album with a comparatively somber, melancholy song as Wayne laments that his one true love doesn't love him in return. Wayne's strong voice handles the subtle tempo changes well and I really like this opening number. "Danke Schoen" certainly takes the cake as one of Wayne's greatest hits ever; his rendition of "Danke Schoen" is definitely the standard for all artists to emulate. Moreover, listen for "Someone's Ahead Of You;" Wayne delivers this like the pro that he still is today!
"Dream Baby" is great teen pop from the early and mid 1960s; and "Bill Bailey (Won't You Please Come Home)" gets a rather jazzy, peppy version as Wayne delivers this to perfection. Wow, "Bill Bailey (Won't You Please Come Home)" sure does get a fast tempo; but Wayne never falters one bit.
"Red Roses For A Blue Lady" is easily another highlight of this album; Wayne croons this as only a pro could ever do. The musical arrangement makes great use of the brass, strings and percussion. In addition, "I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time" gives us Wayne performing a tune made famous by The Andrews Sisters; and Wayne sings this beautifully.
"Summer Wind" has Wayne singing a very romantic number about romance; and the album closes with "Games That Lovers Play." "Games That Lovers Play" has a stunning musical arrangement and Wayne's voice emotes all the subtle nuances of the lyrics.
Overall, Wayne Newton made and continues to make brilliant contributions to the arts; and we are all better off for it. I highly recommend this CD especially for people who want many great early hits by Wayne on a single CD.
Thank you for all the joy and pain. April 5, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This CD highlights Wayne Newton's Capitol recordings from 1962 to 1966. For some reason, the songs he recorded for Capitol in 1967 arnen't included. When Wayne first started, there was an effort to turn him into a "teen pop" star (which sort of made sense, since he was a teen). But teen pop really didn't suit his style, although his hit "Danke Schoen" was in that vein. Actually, most of the first ten songs on this CD are done in a teen pop style, and they are pretty fun, although Wayne didn't really have much of a "feel" for that kind of music. The secong half of this CD mostly features "adult pop" songs, which were a much better fit for Wayne, despite his young age. The big hit from this time period was "Red Roses For a Blue Lady", but most of the other songs are good, too. It's notable that Wayne recorded "Summer Wind" before Frank Sinatra had a hit with it. This is the definitive CD of Wayne Newton's early years.
WAYBE NEWTON'S BEST CD December 24, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
THIS IS WAYNE NEWTON'S BEST CD. TRACES HIS CAREER FROM EARLY ON WHERE HE WAS TRYING TO NAIL DOWN HIS SOUND AND STYLE. BOBBY DARIN, WHO PRODUCED MUCH OF WAYNE'S EARLY WORK, CAN BE HEARD COUNTING DOWN THE BEGINNING OF A COUPLE OF SONGS. SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT. RE-MASTERING DONE BY LARRY WALSH WHO IS WELL KNOWN FOR HIS SINATRA WORK. IF YOU ARE A FAN OF WAYNE NEWTON THIS IS A GREAT CD. NON FANS WHO ARE CURIOUS ABOUT MR. LAS VEGAS SHOULD FIND SOMETHING TO LIKE HERE AS WELL.
