fine, classic musical numbers from The Dream Factory January 7, 2008

The last two musicals Judy Garland completed at MGM were In The Good Old Summertime and Summer Stock. This is an excellent CD for Garland fans; but it is also a wonderful addition to your collection if you love those classic MGM musicals. There's plenty of music and a few outtakes here; and I think you will enjoy it.
The album opens with the words and music to Summer Stock. The MGM Studio chorus does a great job on the movie's opening medley; and Judy Garland performs "If You Feel Like Singing, Sing" with a lot of positive energy and great emotion. Judy never misses a note here, either. "(Howdy, Neighbor) Happy Harvest" is another great track that Judy sings along with the MGM Studio Chorus; and this number really impresses me. The upbeat lyrics, the positive flavor to the music and the energy in the overall performance is truly convincing and a pleasure to enjoy.
"You, Wonderful You" is a great duet Judy Garland performs with the great Gene Kelly; and "Friendly Star" affords Judy the opportunity to sing so sweetly from her heart. Judy sings "Friendly Star" like the consummate pro that she always was--great!
"Get Happy" proved to be a huge hit for Judy Garland; she performed it to the end of her days in concerts around the globe. The movie rendition stuns me with its beauty and Judy conveys every little nuance of every word. Wow.
The CD then goes on to give us the music--and some outtakes--from the movie In The Good Old Summertime. Judy delivers "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland" flawlessly; and Judy's outtake of "Last Night When We Were Young" is so good it truly should have been included in the picture. Judy sings "Last Night When We Were Young" with panache and a tender sensitivity that I rarely hear or enjoy.
"I Don't Care" is a very peppy little number that Judy performs to perfection; she hits all the right notes and gives this one her all--and you can tell when you hear it. The finale music from In The Good Old Summertime is also very good.
The CD comes with great artwork. This impresses me!
Overall, if you want to enjoy some of the best singing MGM ever released to the public, get this CD and listen especially for Judy Garland's fine numbers. I also recommend this for Judy Garland fans.

AS with their other recordings, Rhino makes the MGM catalogue sound like it was recorded yesterday. Couple that with the excellent graphics and liner notes and you have a movie soundtrack lover's dream come true

This movie soundtrack compilation from Rhino of ?Summer Stock? and ?In the Good Old Summertime? has all of the music from both films, including some outtakes. One minor drawback ? some songs have all extraneous material removed, such as dialogue bridges, tap sounds, etc. It gives them a somewhat flat sound. Overall, though, this a great CD for fans of these movies. Sound quality is excellent.
