Whether you see Dean Martin as an iconic, velvet-voiced crooner or a repugnant symbol of Vegas excess, Forever Cool is a fascinating--if flawed--experiment in keeping the celebrated performer contemporary. A reworking of his vocal tracks as duets with internationally known collaborators (from British singer Joss Stone to Italian chart-topper Tiziano Ferro), the album additionally features new arrangements as well as one previously unreleased track (an a cappella version of "Brahms' Lullaby"), all seamlessly mixed with droll studio banter ("Last time I was this hot I had a kid") that gives the recording a palpable immediacy. In keeping the new instrumental backing tasteful and smart, producers Rob Christie, Phil Ramone, Patrick Williams, and Bobby Colomby spotlight Martin's considerable vocal skills and rescue him from his unctuous, drunk, and schmaltzy self-caricaturizing, even as some of the spoken prattle threatens to lift the martini glass to that trait. While trumpeter Chris Botti and saxophonist Dave Koz prove sparkling choices as collaborators, the selection of vocal guests sometimes seem head-scratchingly strange. Stone, who appears on "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me," is far too husky a singer to pair with Martin's smooth mega-baritone (and one can't help but think she could be his great-granddaughter), while Paris Bennett, the American Idol finalist, comes off as lightweight as Tinkerbell. Perhaps not surprisingly, actor/singer Kevin Spacey, with his hipster Bobby Darin chops, comes closest to matching Martin's joie de vivre, while Martina McBride's elastic, adaptive soprano makes her the most believable female counterpart, even as she is forced to truncate her usual phrasing. All in all, this is a thoroughly enjoyable invitation to a fantasy cocktail party where Dino is always, and ever, the star. --Alanna Nash

This is an excellent compilation of
Dean Martin's songs. Fabulous quality and a great disc for reminiscing.
Well worth adding to a collection.

Clever recreations using modern technology allowing contemporary artists to perform 'with' the late-Dean Martin. Not all tracks work (i.e., "King Of The Road" with Kevin Spacey), while others add a certain artistic 'spark', notably "Baby-O" with Paris Bennett and "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" with Shelby Lynne and Big Daddy Voodoo, to the downright disgusting ("I Can't Believe You're In Love with Me" with Joss Stone). This collection is a good contemporary introduction to the lazy singing style vocal talent that was Dino Martin.
"Oh, That Felt Good!" August 3, 2008
This is what Kevin Spacey says at the end of "Ain't It A Kick In The Head", one of his duets with Dean, and that just about sums up this whole album for me. Hearing Dean again with vocalists Kevin Spacey (yes, that's right the gifted actor sings on this album), and Charles Aznavour, musicians Dave Koz and Chris Botti among others who admire Dean and those classic songs is a treat for anyone who enjoys Dean's music. Many people seem to dislike these "duet" albums as if they are somehow cashing in on someones name. But projects like these, if they are done well as I believe this one is, only keep his memory alive and bring new listeners to his music. Yes, I own it, and I feel good every time I listen to it.

If you love Dino and what a different collection of his music, this is all most a duets collection. I really enjoy listening to the cd.

Robbie Williams: "I'd like to think he'd be proud of it".
Yeah...well...he wouldn't have been, Robbie. Your voice does NOT compliment Dean's, and pretty much everybody involved in this project should've known better.
In all fairness, though, Martina's and Shelby's voices do compliment Dean's. The rest...Yuk! Save your money and buy Dean's original recordings as they were meant to be heard.
