Product Description He can remain an angel and live forever. Or he can forsake his immortality and become human on the chance that she might love him. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/26/2006 Starring: Nicolas Cage Meg Ryan Run time: 114 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Brad Silberling
Amazon.com Some critics complained that City of Angels could never compare to Wim Wenders's exquisite German film Wings of Desire, which served as the later film's primary inspiration. The better argument to make is that any such comparisons are beside the point, because Wings of Desire was a much more deeply poetic, artfully contemplative film, whereas City of Angels is an enchanting product of mainstream Hollywood. Meg Ryan stars as Dr. Maggie Rice, a heart surgeon who is grieving over a lost patient when an angel named Seth (Nicolas Cage) appears to comfort her. She can see him despite the "rule" that angels are invisible, and Seth's love for Maggie forces him to choose between angelic immortality and a normal human existence on earth with her. Featuring heavenly roles for TV veterans Andre Braugher and Dennis Franz, the film liberally borrows imagery from Wings of Desire, but it also creates its own charming identity. Cage and Ryan give fine performances as lovers convinced they are soul mates, and although the plot relies on a last-minute twist that doesn't quite work, this earnest love story struck a chord with audiences and proved to be one of the surprise hits of 1998. The Special Edition widescreen DVD includes audio commentary by Nicolas Cage, producer Charles Roven, and director Brad Silberling in addition to deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, a featurette about the film's special effects, and the theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon

Not worthy to tie Wim Wenders's shoelaces December 29, 2008 I love, love, love "Wings of Desire." I went to see this remake hoping it would at least approach Wim Wenders's ethereal vision and joy.
Shot "Wings of Desire" in the kneecaps is the feeling I left the theater with. Dark, dismal and downright appalling.
Please, please, please see "Wings of Desire" before you comment on this movie. You'll be doing yourself and everyone else a favor.
CityofAngels December 29, 2008 I saw this movies when it first came out and fell in love with it. I bought the DVD for myself, and now my daughter is hooked on it as well!
wrong rating December 14, 2008 when I placed an order for this movie it was rated PG-13, when I got the order, it was rated R, I was very dissapointed as we try not to watch rated R movies in our home, yet I love this particular one.
One of the BEST movies of all time! November 21, 2008 WOW! Such a powerful movie! It is by FAR one of the best movies p.e.r.i.o.d. The chemistry was amazing, not to mention the acting, but of course when you have two phenomenal actors as Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan, your bound to have an excellent movie. City of Angels is no exception! Cage plays Seth who is an angel that comes to collect the dieing, Ryan plays Maggie a heart surgeon...without telling you all the good parts Seth shows himself to Maggie and he ends up trading immortality to be with her. Funny, heartwarming, and an all around great movie!
See the original September 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know I'm going to be accused of being pretentious, but here goes: After seeing the original, Wings of Desire, I found City of Angels to be an annoying, sentimental nothing of a Hollywood movie. While we're on the subject, I can't understand why Nicholas Cage abandoned those edgy roles for which he is so gifted (e.g., Wild at Heart, Moonstruck, etc.). Anyway, see the evocative Wings of Desire; Columbo's in it!
