This three-disc boxed set compiles all 24 episodes from Sanford and Son's second season, which began on September 15, 1972. The sitcom quickly vaulted to the No. 2 spot on the network ratings--right behind creators Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin's previous effort, All in the Family. The second season brought no changes to the show's basic format--comedian Redd Foxx remained the focus as cantankerous junkman Fred Sanford, with Demond Wilson as his son and perennial foil, Lamont. What the second season did bring was several new characters and some of the series' funniest episodes. The second season supporting cast was filled out by some of Foxx's fellow comics, including Leroy and Skillet ("A Visit from Lena Horne") and LaWanda Page as Aunt Esther, who became a recurring character after "The Big Party." Also joining was Don Bexley as Bubba ("By the Numbers"), Nathaniel Taylor as Rollo ("Have Gun, Will Sell"), and Barney Miller's Gregory Sierra as neighbor Julio ("The Puerto Ricans Are Coming!"). But Sanford and Son's strength remained in Foxx's sharp-tongued and often improvised performance, which was ably abetted by the scripts (a number of plotlines were taken directly from Steptoe and Son, the U.K. series that inspired Sanford). Richard Pryor and Paul Mooney penned two of the collection's most laugh-filled half-hours, "The Dowry" and "Sanford and Son and Sister Make Three," but every episode has its share of hilarity thanks to Foxx and his costars. Though only English and Spanish subtitles are offered as extras, series fans should be pleased with the set, especially as a reference for Fred's best zingers ("I'm gonna stick your face in a bowl full of dough and make gorilla cookies!"). --Paul Gaita

Sanford & Son Really hit its stride in the second season. Redd Foxx had to be one of the funniest people on TV; his portrayal of Fred Sanford was impeccable. Demond Wilson as Lamont Sanford was an excellent foil to Fred.
There are several classic episodes in this set that I'm sure many people will recall. There are some episodes from the original British version (Steptoe & Son) that have been rewritten for the American version. There are a couple of episodes written by the great writer team from The Andy Griffith Show, Everett Greenbaum & Jim Fritzell. There's also an episode that Richard Pryor co-wrote. Probably, the biggest improvement in the second season was the slight shift in attitude of the character Lamont. It's a subtle difference but the character is not quite as caustic.
Buy this & enjoy one of the greatest comedy series that's ever been produced for American television.

What a funny series. I watched Sanford and Son as a kid and it still makes me laugh.

Many Great episodes. Fred and Lamont are back with a great cast of characters. Lena Horne makes an appearance in an episode. The episode titled "Rated X" is great. Great collection and a great series.

I saw Sanford and Son on Dutch television, back in the 70's, when I was a little kid. At that time already laughed a lot with them. And now even more, because I understand more of the jokes they tell. I have to look these DVD's at a PC, because of the region-code 1. But I'm enjoying it very much. The Quality is not that good (about 30 years old!), but acceptable. I hope they will release these series also in Holland, with Dutch subtitles.

The quotes from this 5-star series are endless. The title of this review is a lonely sample of the hilarious zingers that Fred (Redd Foxx) would make in reference to Aunt ("watch it sucker!") Esther.
Laughs abound in these wonderfully crafted episodes that covered all issues from family values to cultural difference and made great fun of every subject.
Sanford and Son was way ahead of its time for a 1972 debut. Creator Norman Lear (The Jeffersons, Good Times and more) had a great formula with All In The Family, and he applied it perfectly to Sanford and Son.
If you're unfamiliar with this sitcom, bottom line is that Fred runs a junkyard with his son, Lamont, and Fred's wife passed away leaving the two men to also run the household. But who could possibly not have at least seen a rerun of this classic show with its memorable theme tune?
This collection is as ageless as it is priceless. Some of the season 3 and season 4 episodes are without Redd Foxx due to contract issues, and that was a shame and absolutely effected the genius of the show. Thank goodness it was only a total of 8 or 9 episodes.
And, speaking of price, at the time of this writing it seems a bit cheaper if you buy all 6 DVD seasons separately instead of the 6-season box set that Amazon is offering.
