Amazon.com It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

Great Late 70's Anti-Establishment Truckin' Comic Flick October 10, 2008 Anti-establishment late '70s truckin' fun movie. Great flick with truckin', hot rods and CB radio-speak. A magnificant late '70s American movie. Great cast. Burt is perfect, as is Jackie Gleason as the ultimate redneck sheriff. (Jerry Reed is easy to ignore, but SHINED.) Sally Field shined as well. It's easy to see how Burt and Sally hooked up after this one in real life. The chemistry showed in the movie and helped make it real. Very funny. You need to watch it for what it's worth. They were'nt trying for an Oscar. (Thank goodness.) If you like a simple plot with car-chase action, you will LOVE this movie.
A movie any American should love September 3, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
"East Bound and Down" is one of the great country songs, and this movie is the greatest road movie ever made, the redneck "Easy Rider," the AMERICAN "Easy Rider" (as Patton said, "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser!"), filled with car chases and car wrecks, one babe, a beautifully ridiculous story, the great Jerry Reed at his weary but sarcastic redneck best, and Burt R.'s mustache at its cheesiest. It's the movie those two hippie goofs in "Easy Rider" might have made if they'd taken themselves less seriously. In "Smokey and the Bandit" one of the protagonists gets the babe, both get the cash and then let it ride on a double-or-nothing, and go on to greater adventures. At least one of the hippies in "Easy Rider" was unable to close the deal with a chippie, and both died in the mud in Louisiana. Killed by rednecks!
"Smokey and the Bandit" is worth watching at any time, even with commercial interruptions. Great enough to own a copy. Five stars.

one of the best comedy films ever made for me its number one a true classic
Great gift January 9, 2008 I purchased this for DVD for a friend, she was thrilled to receive it. She loves the Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields combo. She loves to laugh at movies, rarely watches dramas.
I'm sure this was a great choice for her gift.
I can't help but not like it.... December 1, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Many people find me to be a person of refined and cultured taste. I like Classical music and jazz. I like to visit art museums, and I like to read poetry. All I can say about "Smokey and the Bandit" is this: it is a silly, stupid movie of little or no cultural or artistic significance; HOWEVER, I can't help but not like it. I laugh and laugh during the whole movie even though I have seen it about 100 times.
Other movies may be more artful and serious, but "Smokey and the Bandit" is such great fun. The most recent time I watched this movie was during a terrible weekend while I was waiting to pass some kidney stones. The pain was intense and I was trying to cope with it. I took some Motrin and played "Smokey and the Bandit". I began to smile and laugh and I almost forgot how sick I was. Movies like this do a great service to mankind.
