an ok movie. i always like to support independent movies.

 Confusing mess of a film looks at two lowclass hustlers November 17, 2008

Simon and Rem are two young hustlers sharing an apartment and a hazy drug/alcohol existence in the city. Rem is the more alert of the two, although he seems content to turn an occasional trick and spend the rest of his time stoned and plugged into his music in the apartment. Simon claims to want more out of life, including someone to love, but feels powerless to attain it through his self-destructive behavior. When Simon meets Evan, the host of a strange late night home shopping show on cable, he sees him as another lost soul of sorts, and initiates their first sexual liason. These eventually take on a S&M bent, but surprisingly appear to relieve Evan's Tourette-related facial tics, which gives Simon some long desired sense of personal worth. As time goes on, Rem points out - and Simon realizes - that the relationship is just another source of depression for Simon, which he doesn't seem to be able to escape.
When I was trying to make any sense out of the first 15 minutes of this film (an "artsy" hodgepodge of quick disjointed scenes), I immediately compared it to the worst gay movie I ever had the misfortune to watch, "Soul Maid," which stands at the very pinacle of my personal "What Were They Thinking???" Hall of Filmmaking Shame. Not surprisingly, I later found out writer/director/screenwriter Jeff Maccubbin is responsible for both of these fiascos. The best praise I can give this one is that it is not AS BAD as "Soul Maid" ... though it is painful to watch. One could cite a comemdable attempt to focus on the lives of individuals who are definitely in the more-slimey areas of the "pond" that is the gay community, but it doesn't really tell you anything new. A little bit of eye candy, rear nudity and simulated sex make this unrated film a definite hard R. DVD has trailer and director interview. I give it 2 stars out of 5.

"Into It" (Waterbearer Films) is a film that deals with an attempt to find peace in the modern world so in many ways it is about us. Everyone has some kind of demon that makes it hard to rest comfortably all of the time. Our story is about two men, Simon and Rem, hustlers who are on a drunken and drug induced spree. They are depressed and they think that drugs and alcohol will deliver them from the way they feel. No matter how much they try to improve, they continuously find themselves involved in bad deals and even worse relationships.
Jeff Maccubbin who directed "Soul Maid" has come a long way with this film. His characters are real and they experience the really hard facts of life. Simon has allowed himself to sink into the abyss of the hustler subculture and the sewer of gay life. One night when he slips on the ice outside, he finds himself in the arms of Evan, a host on a cable television show. Even suffers from Tourette's Syndrome and this is noticeable to Simon at once. The two men partake of a night of wild sex and Simon realizes that Evan's spasms and tics have subsided. Simon believes that he is responsible for the change in Evan's health and that he was sent to cure Evan of his afflictions. The relationship between the two men becomes sado/masochistic and Simon rests easily in a world where sadness and depression turn him on and he feels that in order for Evan to achieve a soul is by emotional destruction.
Rem, Simon's friend and fellow rent boy, simply sits on the sidelines and watches. He is usually in a drug induced state but he can see what is happening to his friend. Simon continues with his self-destructive behavior and we wait to see if Rem can get to him before tragedy does.
This is a new kind of film from Waterbearer and it a psychological study of the nature of good and evil as perceived by two men who have little contact with the real world. It upsets, it is haunting and it is an excellent way to spend a little time. It is sure to make you think.
