YOU STILL CAN'T TOUCH THE TOPS !!! May 15, 2007 this is all four original FOUR TOPS : LEVI, LAWRENCE , DUKE , AND OBIE . You must understand, this performance was recorded in 1996 - actually OVER 40 years after they'd formed , and this is the last filmed performance with LAWRENCE , filmed only MONTHS before his death... and he was probably very much aware he had only a short time left....yet , DESPITE THAT ,AND THEIR ADVANCED AGE, the TOPS still came out and did a performance that simply SMOKED AND PUT TO SHAME PERFORMANCES BY GROUPS HALF THEIR AGE!!!! TODAYS GROUPS WISHED THEY COULD BE HALF AS GOOD...AND I DARE ANY OF THEM TO BE ABLE TO LAST HALF AS LONG !!!
I love the four tops! They were a major part of the MoTown scene January 7, 2007 I love the Four Tops, I have miost of their albums. I recall during the DIsco Era in the 70's these guys were still hot to play and mix in on the dance floor. In fact when I couldn't get the floor up dancing in smaller places, nothing got them up like playing the hits of the Four Tops, Diana Ross, and many other staples of that era. why the Motown era fit so well in to the Disco era, I can only suspect that their music was know by most all, (it is still played at weddings all the time), and it was great "get up sing and dance" music.
It clearly looks like the video from the DVD was taken from fairly low quality tape, and I mean what one would expect from converting a VCR tape RAW to a DVD sadly. It is difficult to watch compared to the quality of the video of groups performing at that time. Looks OK on a notebook display, but on my 52" Hi-Def Plasma, it was difficult to watch. I believe that is because my expectations are higher as many releases are being cleaned up using more advanced video technology, and even original tapes are being re-mastered to 5.1. sadly this looks like it was slapped together without the advantages of any of the new processing. I would gladly pay 3X dollar value if they cleaned it up.
I saw people talking about the sound, and that was not the sticking point for me. This was like watching a well worn VCR tape with dirty heads. I hope, as a fan, the producers reconsider, but alas I am sure it boiled down to $$$ :(
Poor sound quality May 26, 2004 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I got this DVD and was very dissapointed with the quality of sound on the 5.1 surround sound. My front side speakers and back speakers have no sound to speak of so the centre speaker does all the work. The video is of average quality but a good sound package would have really made the difference.
they were such a unique group May 25, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
i have watched this dvd a lot.these guys were such a unique group of all times and you could see in this that although age and poor health was agaist their will, still their perfomance was so great.to all those people who are complaining about this show i suggest you go to Ebay and find out if they still got TEMPS&TOPS or all the SOULTRAIN VOLUMES FROM 1 TO 20 and there you will catch the FOUR TOPS at their best.otherwise they have tried their best in this dvd and is watchable quality.
THE ONE AND ONLY FOUR TOPS! April 11, 2004 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
There can only ever be ONE - TRUE - FOUR TOPS and this is LEVI - LAWRENCE - DUKE & OBIE - 2004 is their 50th Anniversary together sadly Lawrence left just after this was recorded. LEVI STUBBS JR is at his Best with the opener MCARTHUR PARK and my all time favourite track ASK THE LONELY!Okay they may not be quite the same as in the 60's when they signed with MOTOWN or 1954 when they first formed as THE FOUR TOPS - but they still sound so good! and true performers. Currently LEVI is not performing with the Group, so this keeps us going with the MEMORIES - that NO ONE can ever take away. THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE - FOUR TOPS Thanks Guys! - John
