Amazon.com Passionate but always personable, Barry Manilow celebrates his 100th performance at the Las Vegas Hilton with a stylish, witty show originally taped in December 2005 for a PBS special. Happy to be taking up residence in the same Hilton theatre where Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, and Elvis Presley all played, Manilow spreads his joy with a wildly enthusiastic audience. Beginning with his opening number, "It's a Miracle," Manilow spends most of the evening on his feet and close to the crowd, seldom sitting behind his piano except to wrap fans in the comfort of dreamy, hook-filled ballads. His take on the pretty "Daybreak" highlights the song's lushness and positive outlook, while "Somewhere Down the Road" comes across as a mature plaint about love and loss. A mini-tribute to hit songs of the 1950s proves hugely entertaining, starting with the American Bandstand theme (indeed, there are lyrics), featuring Manilow's backup singers as typically star-struck teens. The '50s suite includes Manilow's version of pop standards "Venus," "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing," and "Unchained Melody," all of which evoke a warm nostalgia. Going autobiographical, Manilow sings several songs ("Do You Know Who's Living Next Door?") from his Here at the Mayflower album, reflections on a unique childhood in a Brooklyn apartment building. Manilow pays homage to Elvis in a stirring reading of the King's "If I Can Dream," reminisces about bygone days of being an opening act for the likes of Helen Reddy, and brings the show to a close with a tuneful "I Write the Songs" and high-octane "Copacabana." A second disc contains a number of special features, including Manilow explaining his reasons for giving up the road to play exclusively at the Hilton. A "making-of" featurette about the PBS program is followed by three songs that didn't make it into the concert disc, plus a music video for "Unchained Melody" and photo gallery. --Tom Keogh

Not a disappointment June 2, 2008 Barry never disappoints, and this DVD doesn't either. I wanted so much to get to Las Vegas to see his show . . . this is the next best thing. Utter enjoyment!
Barry Manilow Live HD-DVD February 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This concert in Hi Def was fantastic to watch and listen to. I watched in 1080P on a Philips HDTV and the video was superb. Barry Manilow gave a great performance as he always does. He was pure Manilow with excellant material and music backup and the audience was very much into what was going on on stage which fueled Barry's performance even more. I cannot say any more about this great artist that hasn't already been said. Anyone who buys this video, be it HD-DVD or standard DVD, will not be disappointed at what they see and hear.
Barry Manilow - Music and Passion January 22, 2008 Awesome DVD of Barry's Las Vegas Show. Non-stop songs and entertainment with a group of backup singers and an orchestra that is truly amazing. A great addition to anyone's Barry Manilow collection!
Barry did it again! December 27, 2007 I've bought this DVD and Music and Passion one and I have to say that they are better than I've previewed! I'm a long time Manilow's fan from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Unfortunately he didn't come to our country (though we have a Hilton hotel here!) but he is a part of my family's best moments. This DVD in special is perfect not only because he is still singing as a young person (I cannot believe he still has such a great voice!)but because of his strong personality that fills all the screen. He's magnetic. When he talks about his childhood and his grandfather or remembers his early times playing only the piano in bars you can see that he has tears in his beautiful blue eyes. I'm very happy with the purchase of these two DVDs and I plan to play them very often in the future! This DVD is a must for any person who enjoys good performances of excellent singers. I hope he continues playing in the future!

I have the DTS version, but the music is the same. This is one of my 3 favorite Barry DVDs, this is a great one to have. It includes an absolutely GREAT compilation of songs. It also includes Barry playing the accordion and playing Flight of the Bumblebee on a kazoo! This is just too cool. Add that to his wit and charm, as he chit chats with the audience in between, and musical talent and this video is just superb.
There is also a tribute to Frank Sinatra. The DVD includes the upbeat version of "Could It Be Magic." As beautiful as the slow melodic version of that song is, the upbeat version is too cool. I don't know which version I love best.
The DVD is done in such a way that you feel like you have a front row seat. The Nashville crowd loves Barry and he gives another 120%.
Barry looks great in this one and puts on a super fantastic show, AGAIN!!! You won't be disappointed if you grab this one up.
