a great life, a so-so biography September 20, 2002 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Some corrections for both Ms. Knight and a few reviewers. Neither Cissy Houston NOR Gladys first recorded "Midnight Train To Georgia". The song was written by journeyman writer Jim Weatherly, and recorded by him. He wrote it as "Midnight Plane To Houston", so it was slightly re-worded for future renditions. BUT, Gladys' version is the DEFINITE work. The conception that Gladys Knight & Pips first hits were when they signed to Motown is also very incorrect. A Top 10 hit in 1961 of EVERY BEAT OF MY HEART (legally credited to just the PIPS), plus a Top 40 hit of GIVING UP both preceded the Motown material. Gladys' has had a long and illustrious career, spanning 4 decades. The book may lack in spirited delivery, but it is a reasonably enjoyable and thorough look at those years.

Not enough info!! January 4, 2002 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I finished this 270 pg bio in only a few hrs. It was very readable but with not nearly enough info about one of the greatest divas. Diana Ross kicked them off a Motown Tour where they served as the opening act--they were THAT good way before they had a hit. Berry Gordy made them return to Detroit quickly!I wished Gladys talked more about the problems she faced at Motown--the missing money, the second class treatment, and the lawsuit she and the Pips won against Mowtown. The switch from Motown to Buddah is also briefly discussed. Gladys Knight and the Pips were one of the few act who made it big after leaving Hitsville. Gladys also BRIEFLY discusses her husbands, children and at the end of her bio-her gambling debt. For those who want to know just a little about the diva..then this one is for you.
Love you Baby! August 5, 2000 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
unlike Aretha's book, Gladys I really enjoyed yours. Don't feel bad that you two don't get along- After reading her book, we all see that she's a bit troubled in the mind! Your book was both insightful and informative. However, I did catch a lie or two in there. You painted this vivid picture of how you "created" the classic " Midnight Train to Georgia". You know this is a lie! Cissy Houston sang that song first and you know it. You had the hit so let her enjoy at least the credit of recording it first! Otherwise, I enjoyed the book, God bless you!
