Smart Decision,Bad Consequences June 18, 2006 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
More Than A Woman is an okay album. Even though Toni's old style of music is a lot better than her new style, she made the right decision by going hip hop, because by doing this, she stays with the time period. Had she kept doing her old style, it would've been even harder than it is now for her to blend in with today's era of music. Hit the Freeway is a great choice for a single, because it is catchy. Me and My Boyfriend and Lies, lies, lies aren't as catchy, but have good lyrics and good beats. She also has songs like: give it back, selfish, and always that are okay, and help keep you hooked into the album.Ultimately, her album is okay.It was just hard for her to make the adjustment.
I reserve 5 stars for only a select few, but....... October 28, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is simply an excellent CD. I actually had the fortune of listening to this for the first time after Libra was released earlier this month. I'm re-auditioning Libra right now. But let me be very straight forward with a real opinion from someone who knows R&B and soul. This is a must have for any Toni fan. Take a close listen to the track "selfish" for a sample of the engineering that went into this disc. Amazing indeed. More than a Woman isn't her best CD, but its a solid four star album and I'd personally like to hear more of this type of sound out of Toni. I'm not suggesting an entire album of this hip-hopish flow, but absolutely at least three or four songs. The weakest track "lies, lies, lies" is still a audio/sensory authority over 90% of the other mainstream R&B artists best tracks. What a sultry voice. Please take the less experienced reviewers opinions lightly and listen to this CD. The proof is in the puddin!
So much more... October 27, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I disagree with y'all because y'all have banned it just for its Hip-Hop elements. It's something wrong with it? Man "Me and my boyfriend" and "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" samples 2Pac's "Me and my girlfriend" and Toni's track is simply better than the one made by Jay-Z "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" made 2Pac to spin at his grave and this one is simply better. "Give it back" featuring The big tymers sounds amazing, I don't know why you don't let the artists to express themselves. I admit Baby ain't my kind of rapper, but the song sounded great. "Hit the freeway" featuring Loon doesn't sound so good as "Give it back", mainly cause it needs more raps "Me and my boyfriend" is the best song, y'all know about the sample, it even has ad-libs by the same 2Pac "Look for me..." The rest of the album sounds amazing. Do me a favor: Try to get 2Pac's "Me and my girlfriend", go and compare it with Toni Braxton's track and with Jay-Z's track, then come to speaK LET ME SHOW YOU THE WAY (Out) +5/5 I really like this song, soud's like old school with some 50's vibe GIVE IT BACK Featuring The Big Tymers +5/5 One of the best songs of the album, at first I wasn't feeling it, but finally it grew on me. A BETTER MAN 4/5 Old school feeling, but there's something missing HIT THE FREEWAY Featuring Loon 5/5 Neptunes production, I like it, but it needs more rap LIES, LIES, LIES 2/5 A metal flavored track, this is a filler ROCK ME, ROLL ME +5/5 I love this song, so sexy. SELFISH +5/5 Released as a radio single for Latin America, I like it, very neo-soul DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN +5/5 I wasn't feeling it at the beginning but it grew on me too ME AND MY BOYFRIEND +5/5 The controversial song, inspired from 2Pac's so sampled "Me and my girlfriend". Irv Gotti really dropped a good beat for this one. TELL ME 5/5 Cool AND I LOVE YOU 5/5 A very good beat, but the lyrics ain't no good at all ALWAYS +5/5 I love this song, one of the best ways to end these kind of albums.
better than I first thought October 10, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first heard this album 3 years ago and I thought it was such bland hip hop crap. 3 years later I decided to give it a second try and I've decided it's the most musically diverse album of toni braxton's career and for that it deserves it's props. I recently got the libra CD too and have rediscovered this one so I feel like I've just gotten 2 new toni braxton CD's in a way
Five Stars (even including 'Me and My Boyfriend') October 2, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
On More Than a Woman, a title that conjures images of the talented Aaliyah and Toni's tribute appearance in the memorable 'Miss You' video, Braxton proves comparisons to the most beloved singers more than justified. She reveals her most sonically upbeat work to date, a pleasure to those of us who had been waiting for Toni to test those waters since the successes of 'You're Makin' Me High' and 'He Wasn't Man Enough' - yet her lyrical exploration of relationship complexities remains relevant and emotionally stimulating.
The haunting 'Rock Me, Roll Me' slips into the heart of obsessive relationships, setting the scene for the telling 'Selfish' where Toni nonchalantly coos "You can call me selfish." The touching 'And I Love You' and 'Always' find the then newlywed Braxton revealing to her husband an undying love as true as the love her fans share for her music. Soft strings bring in the seductive 'Do You Remember When' tamed by the sultry 'Tell Me' where Toni teases "If you want a little menage a trios...well maybe that's too far."
And Toni does have her limits, as the man who finds his bags packed on the independent anthem 'A Better Man' finds out; and husband Keri Lewis is unlikely to forget, given his collaboration with his wife on definite favorite 'Lies, Lies, Lies'. Loon and Pharrell learn that Toni isn't one for second chances on 'Hit the Freeway', while Curtis Mayfield gets the door on 'Let Me Show U The Way (Out)' as a fed up Braxton spits "Let me break it down. Let me show you how, I'm `a put you out!" And Baby (of Cash Money) scores on the comical highlight 'Give it Back', his second pairing with Toni Braxton, as he opines:
"You know I love you right? For real. Okay... All right, it's close to love... I like you - I ain't gon' lie - I like you in a big way."
Even including 'Me and My Boyfriend' the controversy rousing track that sits as the only scarring element of this record, Toni Braxton brings forth a sensual, sly, superior album that deserves nothing less than five stars.
