Phenomenal :-) April 21, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love Cirque du Soleil. LOVE them. I bought this dvd back in 2004 and watch it a couple of times a year, but finally saw Varekai in person today. I've seen Mystere, O and Ka before, and this was also brilliant and phenomenal. The dvd is as excellent as the actual performance. It brings to life the colours of the costumes (superb) and you can obviously see the make-up better too and their facial expressions. The music is great and I love being able to watch this again and again. Nothing of course will ever beat being in the theatre with them watching in person, but this sure comes close and if you are a fan of Cirque, you are bound to love this too. I highly recommend it. People of all ages can watch this fantastic show.
Cirque du SoBoring April 17, 2007 3 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is easily the most boring Cirque du Soleil. I've seen several shows live including Nouvelle Experience in New York Back in 1990. This is by far their worst performance. The first 20 minutes are spent crawling around on the stage. It took 21 minutes for the first actual circus act to begin. Then the director started doing instant replays of his favorite moments of the act as if we don't exist. It was like they got the director from Monday Night Football to put together a circus. Also a circus is supposed to be an overwhelming experience to the senses with moments being created all over the stage. However we missed all these because the director decided that we'd enjoy closeups of peoples feet and eyes much more. No! The music was terrible. I couldn't tell when, or if, they actually changed songs. I think it was just one song that first a woman would sing for a while and then a guy would take over. It's odd that John Gilkey would have anything to do with this high school performance since he came from Quidam which had brilliant music, fantastic circus feats and a wonderful story woven through the acts. There may be something here for those that appreciate performance art, but anyone that thinks they will be seeing a circus should bypass this one and buy Quidam instead.
